The Different ways of Wearing the Knitted Kippot

A kippot is a head covering used by Jews which is shaped as a dome or small bowl. Usually about 5 – 6 inches in diameter, but it can differ according to style and size. Worn to show respect to God, it was more to identify the different sectors of Jews such as the Orthodox, Religious, Conservative and so on with the material used for the Kippot also changing according to the sector. A kippot can be in any color or material with the knitted kippot being the most common out of the lot.

Many different fabrics such as suede, velvet and satin are used to make the elaborate kippots worn for weddings and Bar Mitzvah’s although the brightly patterned knitted kippot worn by the modern orthodox men are said to be the more traditional type. It is said that the Religious Jews normally wear a large black velvet kippot to distinguish them from other sectors.

Being widely available and not very expensive, kippots are given out at occasions such as a wedding or bar mitzvah to the attendees to be taken away as souvenirs of the event. Kippots made for such specific occasions are sometimes inscribed on the inside with the dates and names of the persons who were involved in the event.

Although the kippot is regarded mainly as a head covering for a Jewish male, more and more Conservative and Reformed Jewish women have started wearing a kippot instead of other types of head gear to the synagogue. These kippots are much different to the traditional knit kippot and are made of expensive material in decorative designs embellished with beads and crystals to make them look more stylish.

It is a common sight to see young girls knitting their boy friend’s a kippot or embroiders their name on one as a sign of friendship. In modern times of course children take everything more lightly, even religion and prefer to knit images of the Mickey Mouse or any other Disney Character and at times even that of a Rock Star on a kippot. Although it is not done with any disrespect, elders tend to frown on this type of attitude which they consider as frivolous and uncalled for.

The way the kippot is worn also signifies the different characteristics of a person. The knitted kippot is usually worn in many different ways with some wearing it at the very back of the head symbolizing his embarrassment at having to wear it, on the forehead and slightly off to a side to show his flair for fashion even with a religious symbol, or way up front in the traditional manner.

Hello, Iâ€™m Russ Handler with another tip on Hanukkah. Hey, how about giving those gifts? Well, my friends, thereâ€™s lots of things to consider. Jews have been giving gelt to friends and family since the 17th century. Just recently, during the 19th century, itâ€™s become a more elaborate. Chose your gifts widely; when I was a child, usually on the first night of Hanukkah we got something really big. The second, third and forth night it could have been something very practical such as a watch or even underwear and socks. Something simple, but something new and something to present during Hanukkah.

When youâ€™re choosing your gifts consider your budget, of course, and donâ€™t go overboard. One of my favorite gifts that I gave to my brother last year, was this. This is Hebrew beer. Itâ€™s very special, a six-pack of this cost me $7.50. It was very affordable, it was enjoyable, he loved it and we all got a big kick out of it.

Consider something thatâ€™s going to have longevity. This is one of my favorite things, right here; this book is the â€œJewish Family Celebration: The Sabbath Festivals and Ceremoniesâ€; a great book that just really highlights Jewishness at its best.

For the young kids, give them something as well, that theyâ€™re going to enjoy. It doesnâ€™t have to be spectacular. This book, here, for instance; â€œHanukkah Lights, Hanukkah Nightsâ€. Itâ€™s a great read for any small child, itâ€™s very colorful and they will enjoy it very much.

I have a question on how to call it. Do I call it dried cranberries or do I call it craisins. A local (but non Jewish) elected official pointed out to a staffer that there were a lot of kippot and Yarmulkes in the crowd. Accidental educator He entered education by accident, when Professor Alice Shalvi, founder of the Pelech Experimental High School for Girls, invited him to teach at her school. My first Jewish home

My ketuba, decorated with a border of blue and red flowers, sits prominently in the living room. Nearby, a glass shelf displays a silver-and-gold Kiddush cup inscribed with our names: Mikha'ayl ben Moshe v'Sarah and Devorah Sarah bat Avraham Yakov v'Tovah. And even a casual glance around the apartment reveals other Jewish objects: a shofar on a plastic stand, a wood-and-glass tzedakah box, a ceramic challah tray, a collection of traditional and art-nouveau mezuzot, one for each lintel except the bathroom's.

It wasn't always this way. The apartment of my middle age is my first Jewish home, in a manner of speaking. Because when my wife and I married two years ago we deliberately set out to create a space dedicated to Jewish ritual and practice.

But what does it mean, to start one's first Jewish home? What combination of furniture and philosophy sets it apart as Jewish? In this age of informed choices the range of possible answers is quite large. I can only say what it means to me. Everyone dedicated to Jewish observance will make different choices.

My own Jewish interior design has been progressing through stages. For example, my first digs were as vacant of mezuzzot, kippot, or even something as rudimentary as a hanukkya as my refrigerators were furnished with traife. But even these pads empty of ritual items displayed Jewish literature. I considered myself an intellectual and cultural Jew. Back then, that was my definition of a Jewish home.

My collection included Bernard Malamud's short stories, Martin Buber's I and Thou," the Harvard University Press's dry, academic ÂThe History of the Jewish People," and my ever aging, flaking and cracking Hertz Chumash, presented to me in 1970 by the Queens Jewish Center, and Talmud Torah on the occasion of my bar mitzvah. There were also many works on the Shoah by Primo Levi and other authors. At that time the Shoah, and not Sinai, was what I considered the ground zero of the Jewish spiritual experience.

A glance at our bookshelves today would reveal a so-called paradigm shift: tikkunim, tanakhim, siddurim, various dictionaries and other reference works on Judaism. It's an eclectic collection, running from ÂMy People's Prayer Book" through ÂGod is a Verb" to Susanna Heschel's ÂOn Being a Jewish Feminist." Nearby is a stack of teaching tapes for learning to lead prayer services, perform home rituals, and chant torah. And no collection would be complete with a pile of Jewish cookbooks.

Nowadays we've got our Passover dishes, several hanukkyot, about half a dozen challah covers and a few birkonnim (benchers) to hand out. We've got crock pots for preparing and warming food for Shabbat.

And thanks to many weddings and b'nai mitzvot, I even have a kippot drawer as well stuffed as the stash of any longtime Conservative Jew's. I can pass these out as needed during Shabbos dinners and other festivities.

Of course, making a Jewish home is not all about owning fancy ritual stuff. A nonmaterialistic rabbi I admire once told me she used to light Hanukkah candles on a menorah made of tinfoil. Perhaps following her example, our havdalah besomim (spice box) is an old glass jar with holes pierced in the metal cap. I kind of like it that way, because it's like Cinderella's pumpkin-turned-coach. The spirit invested in this ordinary glass-and-steel cast-off gives it an aura of diamonds and silver.

A crucial part of my decision to create a Jewish home is to make sure these objects are used and not just viewed like pieces displayed in a gallery. This means I have to wrestle with a recalcitrant spirit much as Jacob wrestled with his angel.

Neither advance planning, nor spiritual and physical discipline, nor subjugating my will to a higher authority come easily to me. Nevertheless, each day I push myself into the fray.

I may mope, but I will attempt to sit at the table and recite morning prayers, study a little Torah and Hebrew vocabulary each weekday before running to check e-mail, write or do some other work or procrastination. Despite the possible rewards of peace and joy (or perhaps due to a fear of boredom) I still find myself reluctant to plan ahead for Shabbat and other Holy Days, to call a halt to what Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi called commercial time and enter willingly into the haven of Jewish sacred time.

Another difficult part of creating a Jewish home for me means trying to be, well, nicer to people. It means observing mitzvot and even the wise advice of ancient sages in order not to send nasty e-mails to editors, be a smartass on the phone with my parents, or even lose it and yell at my wife.

Now you're probably thinking that you don't need to believe in God, a set of holy mitzvot or even the wise advice of ancient sages in order to act nicer to editors, parents, spouses and others. But sometimes it helps.

As I continue to create my first Jewish home, I've learned that displaying a ketuba and a Kiddush cup in the living room is like putting on a tallis during prayers. A tallis can be just a fringed garment, or it can be the sheltering wings of God's spirit. It all depends upon how you wear it.

Tuesday night's arrest of an elderly chasidic man for talking on a cell phone while driving, which caused a small -ranking police official of cursing and making disparaging remarks about Jews when responding to the scene.

A City Council member of Brooklyn, Simcha Felder, charged that the chief of department, Joseph Esposito, yelled, "Get the f- Jews out of here," then turned to Mr. Felder and said, "Get the f- NYPD. His position was formerly called chief of police.

The NYPD said Mr. Esposito used profanity, but that no departmental charges would result.

"Chief Esposito acknowledged that in attempting to bring under control a chaotic situation in front of the 66th Precinct station house last night that he used inappropriate language in instructing police officers to 'get these f-people out of here,'" a spokesman for the Police Department, Paul Browne, said in a statement. He did not comment on the allegation of Mr. Esposito using derogatory language about Jews with kippot.

Some refused to accept the explanation. "When you have a very high-ranking police officer on the scene shouting "f--- the community,' something is horribly wrong," Assembly Member Dov Hikind said. "What the crowd of mostly teens did, setting fires, is inexcusable, but the NYPD was grossly unprepared and did not command nor control the situation."

The trouble broke out when Arthur Schick with a kippah, 75, was pulled over for driving while using his mobile telephone,said. The poll worker eventually backed down, but Lent reported the incident to Michael Rosenberg, a candidate for the council who, along with a group of allies, was recording slights against Orthodox Jewish voters with kippot. From his spot the requisite 100 feet away from the polling place, and from his office desk, Rosenberg gathered reports on shouting matches, More proof, to Rosenberg’s mind, that the upscale neighborhood of Hancock Park was out to get Orthodox Jews.

On the other side, non-Orthodox residents were just as disgusted by what they say they saw on Election Day — fake membership cards, line jumping and all manner of deception by Orthodox Jews trying to secure as many votes as they could. Yet more evidence that this group of Orthodox Jews is willing to bend — no, break — the rules to get what they want.

What both sides wanted was control of the local neighborhood council, a relatively new city institution meant to bring grass-roots voices into city policymaking, an ideal that hardly seems worth fighting over in other parts of town. But in Hancock Park, it came to symbolize a battle between those who believed the Orthodox were trying to plant a shul and school on every corner, and the Orthodox who felt that established residents were trying to choke off their community.

Throughout that day and for months following, both sides wondered how the strife ever got this bad. How could it be, they asked themselves, that Jews in Los Angeles were at loggerheads, mosly with other Jews, in an embarrassing conflict that divided along religious lines?

To Rosenberg and his associates, the answer is simple: The neighborhood had been heading in that direction for years, and the election was the climax of years of intolerance.

Other residents challenge that interpretation. They tell a more complex tale, one that holds Rosenberg, an Orthodox Jew and real estate developer, personally responsible for ratcheting up the enmity and pulling the neighborhood into something like a civil war.

On that day in June, the vast majority of Orthodox Jews, as well as unsuspecting local residents who came out to vote, were caught in the middle, stunned. Yes, everyone knew there had been conflicts between the Orthodox and the rest of the neighborhood, mostly centered on . And even while tensions had escalated over several years, setting the whole neighborhood on edge, no one felt as if Hancock Park was roiling with ethnic prejudice, which is how things looked and felt to many on Election Day.

“I can’t say it was anti-Semitism, ‘dirty Jew,’ or say, ‘you Jews,’ and I don’t want to falsely accuse anyone,” said Lent of the poll worker. “I don’t know what his true motivation was, but one thing was clear to me. He was ready to punch me, and he wasn’t going to give me a chance to explain.”

To moderate — and even extreme — voices on both sides, these elections were a wake-up call, setting in motion halting efforts at peacemaking.

Today, contentious issues and tough questions persist. Aside from continuing enmity over the election, residents are in court over the construction of a synagogue on a busy residential street. And an Orthodox school and its neighbors are testing just how far they can push other.

But on both sides, there are people willing to face tough questions so they can begin to bridge the divide.

Do some Hancock Park residents harbor mistrust toward anyone who looks Orthodox? Is this a case of intolerance, \ of some Orthodox Jews behaving badly and now everyone paying the price? How much is just miscommunication? And is the community suffering because it let a few people, notably Michael Rosenberg, become the voice of the Orthodox community?
