William Galbraith threw stones

William Galbraith threw stones at the group and swore at them while making insulting gestures.

Cromer Magistrates Court heard last week that the group, made up of four couples, were on the secluded beach last summer with their children and grandchildren.

being one of the hottest days of the year, they were wearing traditional clothes that covered their arms and ankles, with the men all sporting payot and wearing kippot.

Galbraith allegedly threw stones in their direction to encourage his dog to run at them and scare the children.

Fergus Hardy, prosecuting, said Galbraith told them “the quicker you Jews get out of here the better”.

Asher and Dinah Gratt, who described themselves as the “elders” of the family, said that when one of the sons went out to sea in a dingy, Galbraith threw stones that

When Galbraith left, he held his nose as if to imply that they smelt, and spat at the ground, added Mrs Gratt.

But Alan Wheatman, defending, said that Galbraith always threw stones for his dog on the beach, to encourage it to chase them into the sea so saltwater could clean an old wound.
He insisted he had not been throwing them at the children.

Galbraith, who also denied he was racist, said in a police statement, the allegations were, “typical Jew lies.”

He said he knew the children were scared of the dog because they “screamed blue murder”, and he admitted he could have gone further along the beach, but added: “Why

Wheatman said Galbraith was of a different generation who called a “spade a spade”, but that did not make him racist.

Magistrates agreed with the prosecution that a phrase such as “you people” could imply “you Jewish people” as their dress so obviously put them in that racial group.

They agreed there was a case to answer, but adjourned it, to a date to be fixed, when Galbraith will take the witness stand.
